LPG - A portable and efficient way of living.

LPG is a clean and efficient modern energy source that brings warmth and offers an inexpensive cooking solution for millions of people. As it is most often used in heating appliances. It is important for you to follow safety guidelines and regulations when using LPG. We live in a time where air pollution is caused by the igniting of biofuel therefore the only way to reduce the problem at hand is to start using LPG.

Regulations around gas appliances

When using LPG, make sure you follow the regulations on how to install a gas cylinder the right way. The following steps will help you keep up with the regulations around gas appliances.

  • Make sure not to install your gas cylinder less than one meter away from doors and windows.
  • Make sure that all your copper pipes going through your wall are sleeved and covered correctly.
  • Make sure that your gas container is accompanied by a certificate confirming your gas appliances are correctly installed.
  • Make sure your gas appliances are installed according to SABS requirements (SANS087)
  • When using your gas appliances, make sure there’s sufficient ventilation and do not open the gas flame too loosely. Ensure that the gas is turned off properly after use.

Installations (What can you DIY and what do you leave to professionals?)

Gas Stove - DIY

It might seem hard to DIY your own gas stove but you don’t need professionals to do it for you. All you need is to follow the instructions carefully. Before you begin replacing your own stove, make sure you check for local codes and ordinances to ensure homeowner installation is permitted.

Fixing a gas leak - Professionals

If you smell gas in your house, try not to tackle the leak yourself. Leave that to professionals, what you can do immediately is to turn the gas off at the meter - that’s if it’s safe to do so. Call professionals to help you, make sure it’s the Gas Emergency Services line. An operator will be able to assist you. Or if you are unsure, contact Sims Gas for more advice on installations.

Certifications

  • Make sure the commercial gas practitioner assigned to you is licensed to carry out installations at commercial level premises only. Such installations must comply with SANS827
  • An industrial gas practitioner is licensed to carry out the industrial installation on a business level, therefore such installations must comply with SANS329
  • To be registered as an authorised gas practitioner, under the Occupational Health and Safety Act- No. 85 of 1993 - Section 43 and 44 requirements. You must be approved by the chief inspector.
  • It’s also important that your gas practitioner has attended the LPG safety training. The training course combines classroom and practical demonstration.
