Five rules to keep your gas fireplace spic and span

Everyone knows that a wood fireplace needs regular and constant cleaning, but did you know that your Gas fireplace also needs some routine TLC? That's right! You need to keep these appliances clean and well maintained for your health and safety.

Before even attempting to clean your gas fireplace be sure that both your gas and pilot lights are turned off. Also, make sure that the fireplace is cool or at room temperature and ALWAYS consult your owners’ manual before following third-party tips.

Our helpful rules are meant to supplement but not replace your manual!

Rule One: Clean the glass exterior

Most typical gas fireplace doors are designed for easy removal. Be sure to follow your owners’ guide when dismantling anything. Once removed, place it on a newspaper or old material to protect your flooring. Wipe gently but firmly with a lint-free cloth using a household general-purpose window cleaner.

Clean off stubborn spots with a fireplace cleanser or a ceramic cook-top cleaner and rinse off the residue with a second damp cloth. Once cleaned, dry off your glass with a roller towel. This helps prevent water residue smudges that come from regular cloth. Wait 30 minutes, then reassemble the fireplace as per manual.

Rule Two: Clean out interior

For this next part, you’ll need to use a vacuum appliance with a wand attachment. Carefully vacuum dust, soot, and other debris from the gas fireplace interior.

If you have lava rocks integrated into your display then consider using a filter like a cheesecloth or an old stocking over the nozzle with an elastic band.

Rule Three: Clean your logs

Yes, gas fireplaces also have logs. But these serve more for aesthetic function than regular logs which are good news for you! The gas log sets don’t need too much cleaning. However, enough build-up of soot can lead to discolouration so follow the manual on how to remove them before cleaning.

Once safely removed, take outside and gently remove with a paintbrush that has soft bristles. Be sure to avoid washing or wiping logs with a damp cloth. You may damage the finish. DO NOT spray any cleaning solution onto your logs and be sure to only contact a certified technician when attempting to clean VENT-FREE logs.

Rule Four: Replace batteries

Be sure to always replace your gas fireplace remote batteries every two years. Should the event occur that you need to quickly turn off your fireplace you’ll be happy with the knowledge that the remotes are at least fully charged.

Rule Five: Carry out inspections

You might be able to properly maintain your gas fireplace with relative ease but it's also important to have them checked regularly. Be sure to have certified technicians check both your fireplace and chimney and then give the all-clear.

Vent-free fireplaces have no chimneys, but as stated above, will also need a qualified technician to come through and check.

A good annual check-up ensures that your appliances are in working order and that your family remains safe and secure.
