LPG, or Liquid Petroleum Gas, is an efficient and clean energy source.  It is produced during natural gas processing and is stored as a liquid under pressure in gas bottles or tanks.

It is on its way to being the energy source of choice in South Africa for its affordability, reliability and for cooking, heating, cooling or drying purposes.

LPG Gas is cheaper than electricity, here are 4 reasons why...

  1. LPG Gas is cheaper to purchase than electricity. Our electricity is becoming increasingly more expensive and less and less affordable.

  1. LPG Gas heats up quickly and it reaches maximum heat almost immediately unlike electricity. This means:
    1. Costs for cooking and heating your home will be lower.
    2. You use less due to its fast heating ability.
    3. It is more economical as its heat effect spreads, and can be felt, more widely across the home. Electrical heat is contained close to the appliance in use.
    4. Less maintenance of gas equipment over time.

  1. LPG Gas is bottled in refillable cylinders also making it more cost-effective.

  1. Gas appliances are mostly very energy efficient, their running costs are far less than those of electrical appliances and, in a short space of time, they will pay for themselves in electricity savings.

Do consider the above. And, remember, that as LPG Gas is a natural gas, it is a reliable source of energy. It is always available as it originates from an underground pipeline. Therefore your fuel supply is constant, it will not run out and you will still be able to braai and cook and keep yourself and your home warm, or cool, during load-shedding or any power outages.

Aren’t you tired of expensive electricity bills? Of rising electricity costs? Then switch to LPG Gas and save…

Aren’t you tired of an unreliable electricity source? Of power outages and load-shedding? Then switch to LPG Gas and smile…

It’s autumn in South Africa. The days are getting shorter and each morning is a little darker. And, although the weather is generally warm, we can already feel the slight chill in the air as we head towards winter. People are already thinking about bringing out some of their winter woolies and talking about having warmer, heartier, evening meals.

When planning your meals, be sure to include the fruits and vegetables of the season.  The benefits of using seasonal fruits and vegetables are:

  1. Produce is fresher and tastes better because it has not been artificially chilled or ripened. Instead, it has been allowed to ripen naturally in the sun, is picked immediately when ready and then quickly displayed on sale in our stores.
  2. Produce is always cheaper when it is plentiful and easily obtainable.
  3. Eating seasonal produce also gives our body its nutrients which are appropriate for that season. It’s why we crave certain foods during certain seasons like hearty stews and soups in winter.

Here is a list of our Autumn Fruits and Vegetables:

Autumn Fruit:

Apples, avocados, figs, granadillas, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, naartjies, oranges, pawpaws or papayas, pear, pineapples, plums, pomegranates, quinces, sweet melon, watermelon.

Autumn Vegetables:

Artichokes, aubergines (eggplant), baby marrows, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, butter beans, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chives, courgettes (zucchini), cucumber, mushrooms, onion, parsley, peas, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkin, radishes, sweet peppers, squash, turnips.

Some of the Benefits of Cooking with LPG Gas (Liquid Petroleum Gas) are:

  1. Heating of the pan is evenly distributed as the flames on a gas cooktop are central.
  2. Less heat is wasted as the heat dies immediately when switched off whereas electricity takes longer to cool down.
  3. Operating costs are cheaper as gas is cheaper than, and cooks faster than, electricity.
  4. Gas is more eco friendly as it’s clean power and so creates fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
  5. You are not impacted by load shedding or power cuts.

Here are some great recipe suggestions for cooking with gas and using our wonderful autumn produce.

Replace Paraffin Stoves with LPG Gas Hob Burners, here's why.

Who are the paraffin stove users in South Africa and why should they transfer to LPG (or Liquefied Petroleum Gas or Liquid Petroleum Gas) gas hob burners?  Here are some reasons:

Paraffin Stoves

Paraffin Stoves are predominantly used in informal settlements.

Why you should switch from paraffin stoves.

  1. They are considered unsafe cooking appliances.
  2. They are one of the main causes of fire-related accidents in the home.
  3. They are a fire hazard especially in over-crowded settlements where a fire in one home can quickly travel across and burn numerous houses at a time.
  4. They must be balanced on flat, level surfaces to prevent being knocked over easily.
  5. The life-span of these stoves is only approximately six months but impoverished communities tend to ignore this limit.

And because paraffin:

  1. Is poisonous.
  2. Releases toxic fumes often into the usually small confined households.
  3. Explodes easily.
  4. Is in liquid form.
  5. Needs to be handled with great care as spillages can cause burns.
  6. Must be stored safely, tightly and according to regulations.

LPG Gas Hob Burners

LPG Gas Hob Burners are used in both low-income households as well as rural communities. This is because they are a bit more expensive to purchase - but they are more versatile in that they are ideal for cooking, heating and lighting.

Why you should switch to LPG Gas Hob Burners:

  1. They are very safe and easy to use.
  2. They are sturdy and well-balanced.
  3. They are faster at heating and cooking which means lower gas usage even though LPG gas costs more.
  4. They distribute heat more evenly so food has less chance of burning.
  5. They extinguish the flame immediately the stove is switched off and the heat dies down simultaneously

And because LPG gas:

  1. Is not poisonous.
  2. Does not expose the household to any health hazards.
  3. Burns cleanly so the home is not filled with smoke or odours.
  4. Is bottled tightly in highly pressurised cylinders which do not explode easily.
  5. Is bottled in cylinders so handling and storage is less of a problem.
  6. Lights up quickly and easily.
  7. Is environment friendly.
  8. Requires careful handling and correct storage, as with all fuel types, to minimise the risk of explosions and fire.

LPG Gas Hob Burners costing more initially, being safer to use and operating more cheaply are only some of the reasons which paraffin stove users should consider when deciding whether to transfer to LPG gas hob burners. But in the long term, the benefits of this more expensive outlay will become more than evident.
