Liquid Petroleum Gas can be used in several ways to benefit your home and business, from heating to outdoors, and even for leisure and catering. Let's take a closer look at some of the areas where you can start saving on energy costs today!

Whatever the season, and whatever the weather, SimsGas is always on hand to help you make the most of your leisure time! Liquid Petroleum Gas functions to keep your home warm and cosy in the winter times, when you’re relaxing in front of the TV, and even when the sun is shining! What's more, gas will quickly fire up your braai for your next chill-out session with friends and family.

Have access to cooking on a controllable gas flame, even if you are beyond the main source of gas. If you own a hotel, local pub, or catering business, and are not connected to the main gas system, SimsGas can provide you with LPG with a versatile and portable convenience, giving you the benefit of a controllable flame without the need to have gas lines installed.

Liquid Petroleum Gas gives you the same benefits as natural gas, so whether you are cooking or heating, you'll know you are getting the best service possible. Keep in mind that should you have a power cut, LPG can be the perfect backup system. It's a safe and reliable product ideal for pubs, restaurants, schools, nursing homes, canteens, shebeens and so much more.

Home and Heating

As we’ve said before, Liquid Petroleum Gas is a flexible energy source with all the benefits of natural gas. In addition to hot water, gas fires, heating, and cooking, it can also be used to heat swimming pools, power patio heaters and provide a fuel source for braais. What's more, LPG burns cleanly, without soot, with low emissions, and is completely odourless.

Heating is the most popular and recognised use for LPG. Residential and commercial heaters using LPG consist of both central heating furnaces and space heaters, also known as room-heaters.

The requirements for heater installation and usage are for the safety and well-being of consumers, as well as comfort. As LPG is used in heating appliances, special care must be taken to ensure consumer and family safety above all else, including comfort.

Gas for the Industry

Because of its versatile applications, LPG is used in a variety of ways in several industries. Because of this, it is often used in preference to main gas systems in areas where it is available.

Even in circumstances where gas mains are accessible, LPG has two further important benefits that make it an ideal choice for the surface engineering and product finishing industry. Firstly, it has a higher calorific value and so it burns stronger than natural gas. Secondly, an LPG installation provides a truly independent and secure fuel supply for production.

Gas is an excellent, efficient, and effective source of fuel commonly used in households for heating and cooking purposes. However, anytime an open flame is involved in these processes, there is always a risk of danger. We take a look at common household hazards and provide useful precautions on how to manage your gas processes safely.

Common Safety Precautions

When using gas, there are various precautions you can take to avoid unnecessary risks in the home. Should you feel as though there may be certain hazards in and around the property that might be cause for alarm, consider the following actions.

  • Ensure that everyone in the family is aware of gas safety guidelines.
  • Follow the recommended storage regulations by your gas service provider.
  • Install carbon monoxide testers in your kitchen and have them regularly tested.
  • Ensure that a certified gas technician does quarterly inspections.
  • Ensure that there is adequate airflow around all gas appliances.
  • Ask your certified gas technician to evaluate any risks on the property. He will ensure that your pipelines and storage areas are suitable and follow the correct standards.

Controls for LPG

Liquid Petroleum Gas or LPG requires extra care when used in households. This is because all gas bottles need to be maintained according to strict safety standards. When storing LPG in the home, always ensure that there is adequate ventilation, specifically when gas is being used infrequently. This is because LPG is heavier than air which may lead to a risk of asphyxiation.

LPG safety guidelines for storage include the following:

  • All gas bottles and cylinders must be stored in an upright position.
  • All gas bottles and cylinders must have easy access.
  • Must be kept separate from any flammable source or materials including natural elements such as plants or vegetation.
  • Must be stored away from open drainage.
  • Never keep stock of more gas bottles than necessary.

When renovating your kitchen, you need to have a sound understanding of the correct application of gas lines and appliances in your home. Therefore, it is important to consider and understand gas regulations before going with your next home renovation.

Obtaining a certificate of conformity.

Each and every homeowner with gas installed in their home needs to have a Gas Certificate of Conformity, meaning they adhere to The South African Qualification & Certification Committee regulations.

Just before you get your certificate, an inspector has to come for an evaluation and approve that your installation is safe, leak-free, and working properly.  When it comes to home renovations it is advisable that you get an inspector to check that everything is in correct working condition in order to ensure that your home gas appliances continue to function correctly and as per industry standards.

Regulations surrounding gas installations.

When installing or reinstalling your gas, it should always be done by a gas installer that is registered with the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association of Southern Africa. This saves you from damage that may occur some time after installation. Therefore, it is advisable to remain cautious from day one.

Safety tips for LPG

With gas, it pays to be safe and vigilant. So always remember to follow these guidelines and make sure everyone in your household is aware of them. These are some of the tips you need to know if you prefer transporting your cylinder to a gas supplier for a refill, although there is an option to get it delivered to your house.

  • Always use a qualified gas dealer such as SimsGas
  • Do not transport more than two cylinders in one car at the same time.
  • Never leave a cylinder in the car during summer.
  • Do not place a cylinder on the passenger compartment.
  • Keep away from flames and sparks.
  • Check gas appliances before use all the time.

Let's be honest, we all love a braai sammie. They are considered a South African classic and with good reason. But did you know you can cook them perfectly on a gas braai?

We went on to try out our favourite recipes and decided to share them with you. Read on and pick out your favourite recipe to help you set the tone for the new year braai with LPG from SimsGas.

Aubergine Braai Sammies

  • 2 large aubergines
  • 1⁄4 C (60 ml) olive oil
  • sea salt and black pepper to taste
  • grated 4 large tomatoes, sliced

Cooking Instructions

Make sure you slice the aubergines lengthways into 1-cm thick slices. Thereafter, brush them with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Section the aubergine slices into sandwich forms and add slices of tomato. When cooking with gas, make sure to braai over a medium flame until the aubergines are fully brown. Serve with tzatziki or guacamole for that extra oomph.

Chutney, Cheese and Boerie Sammies

  • 600g thick boerewors
  • 12 slices of thick-cut, farm-style white bread
  • 200 g butter, melted
  • Mrs Ball’s Chutney
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 250 g gouda, grated
  • 250 g mozzarella, grated
  • salt and pepper
  • a handful of chives, chopped to serve

Cooking Instructions

Lay out your meat, then braai your boerewors over high heat (adjust your gas levels) until the outside of the meat is crunchy. Thus ensuring that the wors is still pink on the inside. Let your boerewors cool down somewhat before slicing them into bite-sized discs. Mix two variants of cheese together in a bowl. Place the bread slices out and spread butter over them. Once you are done, spread chutney on the sliced bread and the cut boerewors. Add sliced onion and a bit of cheese with the wors. Close the sammies and butter the top.

Place the sammies into a sandwich grid then place the butter-brushed upside down over low gas to simmer. Make sure to braai the sammies slowly for a few minutes per side until they turn golden everywhere and the cheese is finely melted.

The King Dagwood Sammies

  • 12 slices sandwich loaf bread
  • Butter, for spreading (optional)
  • ¼ cup (60ml) chutney
  • 2 small salad tomatoes, sliced
  • ½ red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (125g) grated cheddar
  • ½ cup (125ml) cream cheese
  • 1 Tbsp (15ml) creamed horseradish
  • 4 gherkins, sliced
  • 200g steak, cooked to your liking and sliced
  • Salt and milled pepper
  • 4 fried eggs (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Butter your sliced bread and spread your slices with chutney, tomato, onion, and cheddar. Mix cream cheese and horseradish then spread your other slices.

Stack your bread slices on top of each other. Pack the sammie and make sure to stack tightly on a braai grid before turning up the gas. Braai the sammie for 8 to 10 minutes over a high gas and continue turning the sammie until they become crispy and the cheese melts. You can serve it with a fried egg on top if you like.
