There is nothing worse than turning on your stove, heater, gas braai or any other gas appliance only to discover that you’re out of gas. But how do you tell if it’s empty or running low on gas? Here are two tried and tested methods to measure the amount of gas you have left in your bottle.

Method One: Weighing

If you think your gas bottle is feeling a little lighter than you’d like, weighing the bottle is a great way to see how much gas is left. Most bottles will have the empty  weight stamped on the neck, and if the weight indicated on the stamp and the weight of your bottle are the same, you’re out of gas. You can then approximate the amount of gas you have left by the difference in weight.

Method Two: The Water Method

For larger bottles that won’t fit on your bathroom scale, this method will probably work best for you. Fill a bucket with hot water from the tap and carefully pour it down the side of the gas bottle. A line of condensation should appear on the bottle indicating where the gas level is. If this line doesn’t show up, wait a few seconds and then run your hand down the side of the bottle where you poured the hot water. There will be a notable temperature difference between where the bottle is empty and where the gas is sitting, with the area of the gas being colder than the empty part of the bottle.
